ArtsRush Magazine

ArtsRush has been on the web since 1997, starting out as a South Coast NSW arts magazine, eventually evolving to cover art from all across this blue planet. Arising from her passion for all things creative, editor, Colleen Duncan, established the site as ‘Rush – online arts’ to add to the voice of South Coast arts. Colleen also runs a busy graphic design/editorial business, HOLLY HILL GRAPHICS on the NSW South Coast. We will continue to cover visual arts, performance, poetry … sometimes subversive but never boring. Because we’ve removed just about all the content from the old ArtsRush site, we’d love to hear about your story ideas.

Artibus et Historiae

Artibus et Historiae: The idea of publishing a new art journal was conceived in the late seventies and realized after the International Congress of Art History in Bologna (1979). Thus IRSA Publishing House was brought into being and the first number of Artibus et Historiae came out in 1980.
The International Institute for Art Historical Research (IRSA - Istituto per le Ricerche di Storia dell'Arte), as a publishing house, was founded with its headquarters first in Venice (1979-1982), then in Florence and Vienna, and recently (since 1996) - in Cracow, Poland.
The title of our art journal - Artibus et Historiae - comes from the very private experiences of its founder, Józef Grabski. ARTIBUS is an inscription on the fronton of an old and very prestigious art exhibition hall ("ZACHĘTA", founded in 1860) in his native Warsaw. The second part of the title, ET HISTORIAE, is a tribute paid to the Countess Karolina Lanckorońska, professor in art history and editor of historical sources for the Polish history in her own "Institutum Historicum Polonicum" in Rome, Italy.
The specific sign of IRSA and Artibus et Historiae - a symbolical representation of a winged angel standing firmly on a balance, held in his own hands - comes from a Renaissance painting by Lorenzo Lotto (Portrait of a Man, Collection Doria Pamphili, Rome) and symbolises the Platonic idea of internal equilibrium between the spiritual and the physical aspects of the activities and existence of man.
Artibus et Historiae is a journal dedicated to the visual arts, published by IRSA Publishing House. The lavishly illustrated articles cover a broad range of subjects, including photography and film, as well as traditional topics of scholarly art research.
Artibus et Historiae particularly encourages interdisciplinary studies - art history in conjunction with other humanistic fields, such as psychology, sociology, philosophy, or literature - and unconventional approaches. Thus it is hoped that the current trends in art history will be well represented in our issues.
Artibus et Historiae appears twice a year, in hardback. The articles are in one of four languages: English, Italian, German, or French, at the author's discretion.

Art Elite

Art Elite Online Magazine, published by David Jacobson with the help of International Art Association Artist Universal, is directed towards artists - it has articles from which they can learn new techniques, information on magazine competitions, and news on other exhibits, etc. They can read about various galleries, find out about residencies and other programs.
It is geared also to collectors - they can learn about many artists they may previously not have had access to or information about. We want to attract attention to those artists, first of all, who, from our point of view, deserve more attention.

Aperture Foundation

Aperture—a nonprofit foundation dedicated to promoting photography—was founded in 1952 by photographers Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and Minor White; historian Beaumont Newhall; and writer/curator Nancy Newhall; as well as Melton Ferris, Ernest Louie, and Dody Warren. With scant resources, these visionary artists created a new quarterly periodical, Aperture, to serve photographers and photography enthusiasts worldwide. Aperture has maintained the founders’ spirit throughout its history—in terms of its editorial freedom, its experiential nature and the confluence of disparate sensibilities and approaches that may converge in any given issue of the magazine. The aim is to foster both the development and the appreciation of the medium and its practitioners.

TATE ETC.

It has taken decades, and the efforts and enthusiasm of many individuals, to make Tate what it is today. In a continuation of this, our magazine TATE ETC. carries the name – with an additional 'ETC.'. Inspired by the gallery but independent of it, TATE ETC. explores the visual arts scene on an international scale. Tate’s collections, events and projects are the starting point to project the themes and contexts of art far beyond the boundaries of the four galleries.
From essays to interviews, from ancient Tate archives to cutting edge studio work, TATE ETC. follows the work creating the most interesting debate, and explores its context, history and meaning. Within these features, we blend the historic, the modern and the contemporary to show that art does not exist in a vacuum, but is rooted in many traditions.
With Henry Tate's legacy as a springboard, TATE ETC. has gone on to become the largest art magazine in Europe.

The Claremont Review

The Claremont Review was first published in 1991 by a team of masochistic editors who saw a need to provide young adult writers with a legitimate venue to display their work We publish 120 pages of poems, short stories, short plays, graphic art, photography and interviews twice each year, spring and fall. Most of the work we publish is by Canadians, but we welcome submissions from 13-19 year olds from anywhere in the English speaking world. We have published writers from every province in Canada, nine U.S. states, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. We take serious writers seriously.
The editorial staff run The Claremont Review on a volunteer basis and all of our editors are writers themselves. We not only publish successful writers, we encourage those working toward success. ALL submissions accompanied by a S.A.S.E. (self-addressed, stamped ensvelope) receive a written comment on their work. Published works are often submitted several times.
Since our inception we have published hundreds of literary and visual artists, many of whom have gone on to gain publishing credits elsewhere. In 1999 we were voted “Literary Magazine of the Year” by Write Magazine. In 2001 one of our published authors, Nick Melling, was included in Canada’s Journey Prize Anthology which publishes in book form the best published stories in Canada each year.

Room

Room is Canada’s oldest literary journal by, for, and about women. Published quarterly by a group of volunteers based in Vancouver, Room showcases fiction, poetry, reviews, art work, interviews and profiles about the female experience. Many of our contributors are at the beginning of their writing careers, looking for an opportunity to get published for the first time. Some later go on to great acclaim.
Room is a space where women can speak, connect, and showcase their creativity. Each quarter we publish original, thought-provoking works that reflect women’s strength, sensuality, vulnerability, and wit.

Queen's Quarterly

In 1893, the Queen's Quarterly first appeared, having been founded by George Monro Grant, Sir Sandford Fleming, and John Watson, among others. Over the past century, the Quarterly has survived many a difficult time, manifesting what one of its former editors described as "the stubbornness of living things." The journal's commitment has always been to offer both the academic and the general reader a lively collection of analysis and reflection, in fields as diverse as international relations, science policy, literary criticism, travel writing, economics, religion, short fiction, and poetry.
Joyce Carol Oates, Sinclair Ross, Margaret Laurence, and W.O. Mitchell are among those who found a home in the Quarterly before eventually being recognized as major Canadian writers. And in more recent years the Quarterly has published the insights of such writers as Michael Ignatieff, Robert Fulford, and Mavis Gallant.
Early in his term, the Quarterly's present editor, Boris Castel, asked veteran designer Peter Dorn to update the journal's look. The result is a much more visually engaging layout, with more artwork and photography and a fresh, open appearance. The attractive new format fits well with the Quarterly's century-old commitment to creating a place for vigorous intellectual discussion outside the cloistered preserve of the specialist.
The Quarterly carries no advertising, aside from the occasional literary promotion, and so it relies on the support of the university, the Canada Council, and the Ontario Arts Council. Subscriptions have increased dramatically over the past ten years, underlining that the Queen's Quarterly's first priority must always be its readers.
As the editor recently told an interviewer, "We are always trying to satisfy the curiosity of the congenial reader, the general reader who wants to be both educated and entertained, a reader who appreciates an intellectual overview of the world. In many ways, I think what the Quarterly does is an extension of the university's mandate. It goes beyond the confines of the physical campus to take fresh, new ideas to our readers. I think there will always be a need for a reflective forum of this sort, one which gives priority to ideas."

Grain Magazine

Grain magazine published its first issue in June 1973, a gestetner edition with stapled, taped bindings, and with cover art on a card-stock cover by a then new artist Joe Fafard. The first edition, edited by Ken Mitchell, Anne Szumigalski, and Caroline Heath included writings by Robert Kroetsch, George Bowering, Robert Currie, and John V. Hicks, and cost $1.00. A subscription cost $2 a year, or $5 for three years. This was the first of a series of semi-annual issues.
In 1976, Grain began publishing three issues a year, and then in 1981, moved to its present quarterly - four issues a year - state.
Throughout all these years, Grain has published the best new writing from Canada and abroad, approximately 2000 pieces of writing and over 220 art images, many of them from Saskatchewan. Grain editors over the years have been: Ken Mitchell, Caroline Heath, E.F. Dyck, Brenda Riches, Mick Burrs, Geoffrey Ursell, J. Jill Robinson, Elizabeth Philips and currently, Kent Bruyneel.
Grain has grown up with a generation of literary magazines, and is proud to be alive and flourishing after nearly 30 years of life. This success is due to the readers, and contributors, but also to primary funding sponsors: Saskatchewan Writers Guild (publisher-in-chief), Sask Lotteries, Saskatchewan Arts Board, The Canada Council and The Canada Magazine Fund.

Existere

Existere was founded and first published in 1978 as a student-run journal covering literature and poetry. In 1980, the journal began publishing regular issues. Over nearly three decades, Existere has largely published as a quarterly, but in recent years has published semi-annually. Content, focus, and presentation has varied widely over the years, but has always included poetry and short stories as its core. Photography, reviews, art, essays, and postcard stories, novel chapters, and much more have appeared on our pages. Existere will continue to be a student-run journal and publish fiction, photography, and art, but will also add more non-fiction, reviews, and criticism as we grow.
How do you pronounce Existere? It depends who you ask. Our name comes from Latin and means "to stand out" or "to stand apart." Therefore is should be pronounced ex-iss-TAIR-AY. However, being that Latin is not in as common usage as it once was, many refer to our name as EX-ISS-STAIR. Either is fine. We're just happy to have you pick up a copy and enjoy our contributors.
For those of you inclined to peruse the Internet in more detail, Existere has a listing on Wikipedia and a site on Facebook.

Event

Now in its 37th year of publication, Event is a celebrated literary journal where new and established talent--in fiction, poetry, non-fiction and critical reviews--will be encountered. Event also serves as a touchstone for writers seeking advice and critique. Our magazine aims to unite the writing and reading community, enriching the life of our readers.
We are proud of our Annual Event Creative Non-Fiction Contest, established in 1987, the longest-running annual contest of its kind in Canada.
Our unique Reading Service for Writers, established in 1993, provides affordable, high-quality editorial feedback to scores of writers, some of whom go on to be published in Event or elsewhere and win literary awards.
Event annually solicits and publishes a selection of "Notes on Writing"--brief, personal insights into the writing process by an eclectic mix of established and emerging Canadian writers.
While over its three-decade history Event has historically placed an emphasis on narrative, our editorial mandate is to cast a wide net and publish both accessible and challenging writing. We do not pursue a particular agenda in literature, save for excellence in expression and intensity of experience.
Our journal thrives on a balance of both traditional narrative and formally innovative works of poetry and prose.
The majority of our content remains unsolicited.
Event covers feature the work of up-and-coming Canadian photographers.
Through its role as the Douglas College Review, Event serves as a creative and cultural ambassador for the College, while the College acts as home and patron of the magazine. We value and nurture the relationship between Event and the Douglas College community.
