Soufer Gallery was established in November of 1977 when it opened its doors at the present location. Under the direction of Mrs. Mahboubeh Soufer, the gallery’s focus was primarily on French contemporary artists. During the 1980’s the gallery’s emphasis shifted to French Post-Impressionists. For over twenty years this has been a central focus of the gallery, specializing in the works of Raoul Dufy, Maurice Utrillo, Andre Lhote and their contemporaries.
Rozita Shay joined Soufer Gallery in 1987 while pursuing her studies, and has been pivotal in helping Mahboubeh Soufer define her collection. She has been the Director at Soufer Gallery for the past fifteen years.
Subsequently, the focus shifted to include German Expressionists, specifically concentrating on the work of George Grosz. Among the many memorable exhibitions, were extensive and comprehensive shows of Max Beckmann’s etchings and Ernst Barlach’s sculptures.
Soufer Gallery usually displays works from its extensive inventory holdings, and on occasion does hold special exhibitions. These exhibitions generally focus upon a particular contemporary artist such as Silas Shabelewska and Brother Thomas.
