Mercury Gallery - Boston - USA

Mercury Gallery was opened in 1994 by Amnon Goldman with a focus on the work of the New York expressionist group known as The Ten. The group formed in 1935 and counted Mark Rothko, Louis Schanker, Adolph Gottlieb and Joseph Solman among its members. The Gallery takes its name from the original Mercury Gallery which opened in New York in 1935 and operated until 1939.
Mercury Gallery exhibits paintings, works on paper, sculpture and ceramics by twenty established artists, whose work has received national and international recognition and acclaim. The gallery emphasizes the important historical and visual link between the 1930s work of The Ten and its contemporary artists, who share a philosophy articulated by Joseph Solman: “I have long discovered for myself that what we call the subject yields more pattern, more poetry, more drama, greater abstract design and tension than any shapes we may invent.”In 2001, Mercury Gallery in Rockport, Massachusetts opened, featuring work by the same artists with an emphasis on works depicting Cape Ann.
Amnon Goldman, Director, has worked in the arts for over thirty-five years. He ran a gallery in Israel, was a private art dealer in London and has worked as a designer, teacher and curator. He introduced Joseph Solman’s work to Boston in 1986 and is now his primary dealer. Mr. Goldman currently serves on the board of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival.
