Johnny was born in London to African/Irish parents. At the age of 16 he made his first piece of furniture while working as an apprentice for a traditional cabinetmaker. Since then his craft skills have taken him all over the world, including a stint working on cruise ships making furniture for its casinos. He now works from his base in rural Essex.
Wanting to express his own style, in 2003 Johnny decided to submit some of his own pieces to be exhibited at the prestigious 100% Design Show. The judging panel applauded his work and Johnny has now exhibited at the show for the last four years.
In only his second year at 100% Design, his Black & Twisted unit was spotted by RIBA and nominated as one of the 'Best Products of 2006' It is one of several pieces that Johnny has now had featured in the national media.
If Johnny had to name his style he would call it Theatrical Minimalism. His belief is that furniture should be functional, well designed and practical. But also that nothing should be overlooked or neglected, as shown by the magenta flocked drawer linings in the Black & Twisted. Every piece that comes out of his Essex Studio is dated, numbered and signed.
