University of Michigan Museum of Art - Ann Arbor - Michigan - U.S.A.

.
The University of Michigan Museum of Art—a meeting place for the arts situated at the heart of a great university. With the addition in 2009 of the 53,000 square foot Maxine and Stuart Frankel and the Frankel Family Wing and the restoration of historic Alumni Memorial Hall, UMMA ushered in a new era, a reimagining of the university art museum as a new “town square” for the 21st century. With dramatic new galleries highlighting works drawn from the Museum’s collections of more than 18,000 artworks (representing over 150 years of collecting at the University) special exhibition spaces that soar with new life, “open storage” galleries, and a range of lively educational and event spaces, UMMA is committed to making this your museum. Meeting spaces for campus and community organizations, new programs in the visual, performing, and literary arts, a new UMMA Store, and new spaces to relax—all these enhancements seek to place the arts at the center of public life. Whether you’re here for a moment of quiet contemplation, a lively debate about the meaning of art, a performance, class, or event, or just a little down time, we hope you’ll make UMMA a habit.

Anchorage Museum - Anchorage - Alaska - U.S.A

.
A world-class museum located in the heart of Alaska's largest city, the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center began as a public-private partnership to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the purchase of Alaska from Russia. The Museum opened its doors in 1968 with an exhibition of 60 borrowed Alaska paintings, and a collection of 2,500 historic and ethnographic objects loaned from the Cook Inlet Historical Society.
A grant from the National Endowment for the Arts made possible the first visiting national exhibition, "The Far North," from the National Gallery of Art in 1973. That same year, the Museum became the first museum in Alaska accredited by the American Association of Museums, and voters approved a bond issue to pay for a 15,000 square-foot building addition.

In the next decade, with the flood of revenues from oil development, the state funded community-wide building projects. "Project 80's" led to a major 140,000 square-foot expansion of the Museum in 1986. Funds were raised to complete the Alaska Gallery, a showcase of the Museum's permanent historic and ethnographic collection. This Gallery remains a popular Alaska resident and tourist destination, helping school children and adults alike explore Alaska's unique history and rich cultures.

As the facility grew, so did the Museum's collections. The permanent collection now numbers 25,000 objects plus an education collection of roughly 2,000 artifacts; the Atwood Resource Center houses more than 500,000 historical photographs, 12,000 publications and 800 maps.

Each year, more than 20 travelling exhibits from around the globe visit the Museum.Travelling exhibitions are complemented by innovative public programming--community-wide cultural events, Free Family Days featuring local artists and hands-on art activities, and docent-led tours for approximately 15,000 school children every year.

In 1992, the Museum became the home of the first regional office of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History Arctic Studies Center. The Arctic Studies Center supports the Museum's mission through research, education, collections and exhibitions. Today the Museum-one of the 10 most visited attractions in Alaska-looks forward to another expansion of both its facility and mission, to become the region's premier repository and workshop for the study, appreciation, and enjoyment of the culture and science of the North.

Amarillo Museum of Art - Amarillo - Texas - U.S.A.

.
The collection has diverse treasures. Like many other Texas institutions built in the early and mid '70s the Museum began in 1972 as a non-collecting institution. However, by 1979 the Board of Trustees had established collection policies and since that time the Museum's holdings have grown steadily. The earliest collection focus was early American Modernist paintings and today the collection is best represented in this area by the four Georgia O'Keeffe watercolors and several works by John Marin. These works are in the context of other members of their circle such as Edward Steichen, Edward Weston, Paul Strand, and Alfred Stieglitz. Mid-century Modernists are represented by a particularly nice Franz Kline and important pieces by Louise Nevelson and Helen Frankenthaler.

A small group of European paintings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries are best represented by two excellent paintings from the mid 1700s by the Italian painter Francesco Guardi.

The photography holdings are dominated by the work of F.S.A. photographer Russell Lee, however, excellent examples of his colleagues Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, Jack Delano and Marion Post Wolcott are included.

Since 1995 the Museum's Asian art collection has grown dramatically through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Price of Amarillo. The collection includes representative textiles from every primary weaving area of the Middle East with examples from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. A comprehensive selection of Edo period Japanese wood block prints by all the major artists is in place and being added to yearly by the Prices. Of particular interest are the South and Southeast Asian sculpture holdings in this collection. Again, this area continues to grow, but currently the collection has Buddhist and Hindu pieces ranging from 2nd century B.C. Gandharan works to 9th century Java and 14th century Khmer sculpture.

Allentown Art Museum - Allentown - Pennsylvania - U.S.A.

.
The Allentown Art Museum was established through a grassroots effort led by the teacher, painter, and critic Walter Emerson Baum (1886-1956). Founded and incorporated during the Great Depression (1934 and 1939, respectively), the Museum served the local community for twenty years in a city-owned Federal-style house, primarily exhibiting the works of area artists.

In 1960 and 1961, a gift of 53 Renaissance and Baroque paintings and sculptures from Samuel H. Kress (a native of nearby Cherryville, Pennsylvania) brought the Museum to a new level. The Kress gift stimulated community visionaries and Museum friends to purchase and refurbish a building suitable to house the new collection. The Museum stands on that location today.

In 1975, an expansion to the building was completed to enhance the Museum's programs and collecting plans. At the time, the Museum installed a room designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as part of its permanent collection.

The collection, still largely defined by European paintings in 1975, expanded with a large collection of textiles and another gift of works on paper. The 1978 acquisition of Gilbert Stuart's beguiling portrait of Ann Penn Allen, granddaughter of the founder of Allentown, set the benchmark for the qualitative standards of the collection. The Museum's goal, to develop an American collection parallel to the quality of the European collection, is one that the Museum is well on its way to achieving.

In 2010-2011 the Museum underwent renovation to include approximately ten thousand more square feet of gallery, storage, and public space. Another twenty-five thousand square feet of existing facility was also refurbished.

Today, the Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley embraces the broadest possible audiences, offering tremendous variety and quality in our collections and exhibitions, educational and popular programs, and a busy calendar of public events. We serve more than one hundred thousand participants annually, of whom more than fourteen thousand are children in school programs.

The Museum's collection of more than seventeen thousand works of art offers our community the opportunity to experience nearly two thousand years of cultural heritage in an accessible and visitor-friendly environment.

Akron Art Museum - Akron - Ohio - U.S.A.

.
When the museum first opened its doors on February 1, 1922 as the Akron Art Institute, it was located in two borrowed rooms in the basement of the public library. The institute had severely limited financial resources but ambitious founders. They hoped that in addition to offering art instruction and exhibitions, the institute would eventually possess a permanent home and a collection of historical and modern international art.

Volunteers were the sole staff until 1924, when city support made it possible to hire a professional director. The Great Depression tightened finances and ended City funding, forcing the institute to again rely entirely on volunteers from 1931 to 1945. It functioned — much of that time in borrowed spaces — as an art center, offering classes and exhibiting mostly local artists. The collection was small, eclectic — containing archeological artifacts and decorative as well as fine art — and composed entirely of gifts. In 1937 the institute moved into its first permanent home, a historic mansion. Just four years later, a disastrous fire destroyed the building and much of the collection, threatening the institute's existence.

It arose after World War II, phoenix-like, from the ashes with a professional staff and a new focus: fine art and design. Strengthening the fine art collection became a goal, leading to the first purchases of art. To educate the general public and encourage collecting, major loan exhibitions were organized, including contemporary design shows that garnered national attention. A professional school emphasizing the design arts was established. In 1950, the institute moved back to where it had begun, the former public library, although this time it renovated and occupied the entire building.

In the mid-1960s, a re-examination of the institute's mission began. Over the next fifteen years, the institute was transformed from a school and art center into a museum. When the school closed in 1965, fine art became the institute's primary emphasis. The goal of forming a distinguished comprehensive collection was replaced with a more specialized focus, exhibiting and collecting art produced from 1850 to the present. This focus was, and remains, unique in the region. In October 1980 the importance of collecting as part of the mission was sealed by a name change. "Akron Art Institute" became "Akron Art Museum." The following year the museum moved to another renovated historic downtown structure, the 1899 old post office building it still occupies.
Over the next quarter century, the museum has continued to enrich the lives of those in Northeast Ohio and beyond through modern and contemporary art. Its nationally recognized collection was documented through the publication of collection catalogues. Three acquisitions endowments were created to ensure the collection's future growth. A greatly enlarged general endowment provided increased, more stable funding, allowing the staff to undertake ambitious programs and exhibitions with national and even international impact. In 2007, its eighty-fifth year, the museum more than tripled in size with the opening of the new John S. and James L. Knight Building, which adjoins the 1899 building. Spanning three centuries, like the museum's collection, together they symbolize the museum's dual role as preserver of the past and herald of the future.
