Extra City - Antwerpen - BEL

Extra City is a platform for the production, presentation and debate of artistic practices. Extra City's international exhibition program focuses on contemporary artistic developments from Belgium and abroad, including historical positions that are of key relevance for today's discourses.
Placed among the larger centers such as those in Amsterdam, Paris, London, Brussels and Cologne, Extra City seeks to address engaged audiences from this transnational region by offering a qualitative and challenging program of exhibitions and related events. Extra City benefits from its unique location and provides an established program complementary to the larger centers in Antwerp and the wider region.
Extra City collaborates with local partners as well as with international institutions, museums and universities, in the development and dissemination of its programs, and provides guest curators and collective initiatives with a platform for the advancement of exemplary projects. Moreover, Extra City offers a forum for independent art initiatives in its Project Room. Extra City is modeled on a 'Kunsthalle' with an exhibition space of 1100 m2 and flexible facilities for its various other activities, such as debates, talks, and screenings. In addition, it increasingly produces publications and online content.
Extra City was founded in 2004 by curator and critic Wim Peeters, and quickly gained an international reputation. It was temporarily situated in the Antwerp harbor area, in a distinctive hangar structure that has since been demolished. In 2006, curator and critic Anselm Franke was appointed artistic director and the institution moved to new premises in Antwerp North, a former industrial space that is gradually being further developed.
Since September 2008 the artist-run organisation NICC has been housed in the same building, with a new exposition space on the other side of the Tulpstraat, connected to Extra City by a bridge. While preserving their individual initiatives and missions, both organisations together provide a dynamic location for contemporary art. in no. 79 Tulpstraat, promoting visual art and culture at a local, national and international level.
