Berenberg Gallery - Boston - USA

The Berenberg Gallery (est. 1999) brings to the Boston area the dynamic creations of contemporary folk and self-taught artists. Working outside and often unaware of the conventions of the mainstream art world, these artists produce rich, highly personal images that reflect their inner world as well as the world around them. Many self-taught artists create their art in isolation due to rural lifestyles, institutionalization, and physical or emotional disabilities. At times using only available or recycled materials, they create distinctive works of art that are diverse in style, technique, and subject matter. Drawings, paintings, sculptures, textiles, and ceramics give shape to the artists' visions from the whimsical to the profound. Berenberg Gallery showcases the work of both established and emerging artists.
Lorri Berenberg opened the Berenberg Gallery after completing a twentyfive year career in museum education. As associate director of education at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston she developed some of the museum's most popular and innovative programs. Her passion for contemporary folk and self-taught art comes as a natural extension of her work with artists, individuals with disabilities, and members of diverse communities.
